Being a Single, Independent, Fierce Woman in 2023

Hey! I’m Lilly, 20 years old and love all things related to wellness, community, and positivity.

From a very young age, I have aspired to be an independent, influential, and faith-driven woman. I was born and raised in Temecula, CA, and as soon as I graduated from high school, I went from a suburban lifestyle to that of a Philadelphia city girl. *Flashback* In 2020, still in high school, I started my own baking business, Love and Sugar By Lo. From a very young age, I was always in the kitchen alongside my father and have always found great comfort in the art of creating and plating dishes. After my father passed away due to suicide in 2020, I made a promise to myself that I would never let my aspirations to succeed and my passion for cooking die. Things have changed a lot for me since then, but still, my goals are clear: by the time I turn 30, I will have obtained a certificate in cooking and baking and will have written a cookbook that includes family recipes and cherished memories in the kitchen, a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business and Finance, and a MBA in Business Administration from one of the top business schools, Drexel University, all of which are currently in the works and which I am currently attending.

The "city girl" life has always been a dream of mine since a young age. Living out here, waking up at 5 a.m., reading scripture every morning, working out every day, and eating clean have become a daily routine for me. You can find me running along the river, cooking some dairy- and gluten-free dishes, strolling through the local farmers’ market on the weekends, or trying all the must-have workout spots in the city. Although I wouldn’t call this my permanent home, I wouldn’t change this experience for the world. Living in the city, alone, across the country from my hometown, was an unknown road, and it was an unknown I was willing to take.

I am passionate about sharing my journey, experiences, and life lessons with others in the hopes of encouraging and helping build confidence through prayer and self-love. I am a mental health advocate, more specifically a suicide awareness advocate. I stand strong in my faith and love for God, and I encourage everyone to find a daily routine that creates a happy and healthy mental and physical balance.

Doors close on me. I get told my ideas won’t work. But self-awareness can change how you see everything. Most importantly, I no longer feel lost, stuck, or unfulfilled. And I no longer have the fear of regret because I am creating and living my dream with every passing day. I don’t have all the answers; I make mistakes and have bad days that are mired in fear and self-doubt, just like the rest of us. I truly believe you must bring your whole self to the table if you want to thrive in today’s world. No matter what your dreams or obstacles are, you have the power to change your life, and by doing so, you’ll change the world. Never let anyone tell you no; if someone tells you no, you are asking the wrong person. And never forget this: Don’t change yourself for other people; be unapologetically you. The right people will love, support, and push you to be the best you can be. Now go out there, stand proud, and never be afraid of who you are!

With all my love,

Lilly Arruabarrena
